There are many modules that can do this for you, wouldn't this be better as a module anyway as opposed to the core?

On Avatar Galleries: I used them and I'm disappointed they're being removed but if anyone is wondering I've already created a plugin to add them back.

at least with it being core, it's maintained by the mybb development team and not a plugin author who might go MIA in 2-3 weeks after the plugin is released...?!
