Custom On/Off Icons per forum section/sub section

I know that an additional icon can be added via a few plugins next to the standard on/off icons.. but would it be possible to instead have an individual icon per forum section that is able to be also on/off at the same time. Instead of a special icon for forum and also on/off icon next to one another.

I could design my icons and then create a color version and greyscale version or something like that.

Just wondering?
