I think I remember reading somewhere that if the backend name was changed from default, that the Admin options wouldn't be available on the front end. Is this correct, or am I remembering wrong...? Maybe it's just a link to backend Admin CP....?

If you rename the directory and change the directory name in ./inc/config.php you'll be linked to the correct location.
No longer involved in the MyBB project.
