Show forums in columns/rows of 2

Hi

For a theme I'm making, I'm trying to get the forumbit to look something like this, with the forums within each category showing in rows of 2:


(I made this image in an image-editing program)

I've been trying this without success.

Does anyone know how to get it like that? (and if possible in table structure, not with div's). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
