If I remember correctly, Google made a blog post stating that they ignore meta tags outright.

I believe they've said that they're weighted much lower than other factors. That's the last I remember, at least.

They mention here that they ignore keyword meta tags entirely and that the description meta tag is not used in ranking.

Thanks for the reference! Been paying more attention to the PHP and programming communities rather than website administration now, so I never caught that. That'll save me some time in the future.

Whether or not it's actually useful for SEO, it's easy to implement and just makes sense.

The description meta tag is useful to display a meaningful snippet about your page once it's listed in search results, but its content is not used for ranking.

The keywords meta tag is not used at all by either Google or Yahoo any more.
 
Any other meta tags are not useful in any way for search engines, they are ignored. If there's no particular tool you use that needs them (e.g. some web builder program or special robot that uses them) you'd do well to remove them, as they only add bulk to your code.

While you may need rank to make search results show up; it's equally important to make that search result look appealing. That's where it helps to have a proper <title>, meta description, URL, site structure, etc.
