Transfer old database into 1.8 possible?

Hi, I've spend a lot of time on the old versions and had created a lot of threads, posts, usergroups, tables etc.. and I've just updated my forum version into 1.8

I got a backup from the old version, but is there a way to convert it, or transfer it into 1.8? I've tried to upload the database but doesn't work. please help me!

import through phpmyadmin, and rerun upgrade after removing lock file in the install folder an option?
