How do I add things to the portal? Like sponsor images, html boxes and so forth.

in the portal template you can add required images & other html codes after {$header}

admin panel >> Templates & Style >> Templates >> your theme templates >> Portal Templates >> Portal

So it needs to be done manually? No blocks and such? ala SMF?
