Is there a plugin that renders the index (categories/forums) as a sidebar ?

I'd like to have a sidebar that displays categories and forums in a sidebar, so that it is available as a navigation in all the forum pages.

Thus users can use sidebar to navigate between different forums rather than going back to the index.

Is there a plugin that already does that?

Ideally I'd like it to still feature the icon that says if there are new posts.

ps: Also do you know if this can be performant? Is the list of cats and forums cached somewhere?

It is already cached. Look at your Cache Manager in your Admin CP, under Tools & Maintenance tab.
