Edit: delayed response

login to web host control panel and navigate to forum's database (through database manager like phpMyAdmin)
browse to adminoptions table of the database
fields are loginattempts, loginlockoutexpiry, 2fasecret, recovery_codes

to remove the login lock:
2fasecret field value & recovery_codes field value can be wiped out
loginattempts, loginlockoutexpiry can be changed to 0 (zero)

I got 1 code when I tried using the 2 step verification. But idk how I got it.

When / where do I scan for the code?

if you enable 2 step verification at forum admin panel then
whenever you try to login to forum admin panel you get the verification code
and in general an app like Google Authenticator is used for the scanning

however this 2factor authentication facility is expected to be improved in a
forthcoming version of MyBB - until then may be better to postpone using it
