Check in the ACP, Register Options:

AdminCP => Configuration => Login and Registration Options

Try Add Question Performance 

- add custom questions on admin cp -> configuration -> Security questions -> add new question

^ that short registration method doesn't work with recent versions of MyBB (MyBB 1.8.x)
you may PM me temporary access to forum admin panel to check the registration issue
