Nice Looking buttons

Umm, i am making my own theme from scratch i am using note++ to code it.

I would like to know how to make cool looking navigation buttons. I want them to look  professional. Dose anyone know how to actually make them look nice and maybe someone could give me a link to where i can find out more about it.
