Just wondering if someone can tell me if myalerts actually sends notifications to facebook or not? or is there another option to integrate mybb with facebook and other social media?

MyAlerts doesn't send notifications anywhere outside the forum - at present it can be used within the forum only.

Edit: not sure if MyBB Publisher plugin is working with MyBB 1.8.x

i was just looking at myseo as well, do you know if it will send notifications to facebook?
