Loving the theme, but I would like to add a few links to the welcome bar (float left of mod cp and admin cp)

Here is what I want to add:

<span class="float_left">
<ul class="buttons">
<li><!-- UNREADPOSTS_LINK --></li><li><a href="{$mybb->settings['bburl']}/search.php?action=getdaily">{$lang->welcome_todaysposts}</a></li>
<li><a href="{$mybb->settings['bburl']}/search.php?action=getnew"> View New Posts</a></li>
<li><a href="{$mybb->settings['bburl']}/misc.php?action=markread&my_post_key={$mybb->post_code}">Mark Forums Read</a></li></ul></span>

Every time I try adding it into the header or welcome member templates, it just messes up the layout.  Can anyone give me some guidance?

I have the theme working mostly with the latest release of MyBB except the login form seems to open at the bottom of the container. Is it supposed to do that?
Could someone possibly point me in the right direction to get it to fade in and out? I know this would be a jquery thing.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
