You keep mentioning plugins, but the core itself did not support anything other than MySQL well, so there was no point to support it in plugins either. I haven't tested this in 1.8 but in 1.6 it used to be you'd get database errors within 5 minutes after installing, long before adding any plugins.
And that's fine by me, really. It's called LAMP for a reason.
