What happens if you try to use an theme made for 1.8 in 1.6? What's the difference between 1.8 and 1.6? Is 1.6 more safe since lot of people using it than 1.8.

It won't look pretty. There were some templating/theming changes between 1.6 and 1.8 that are kinda important.

Definitely not. 1.8 receives security fixes while 1.6 will not receive any more fixes. Therefore, it's quite silly to run 1.6 at this point, yet people still seem to insist on doing so despite the risks. People are mainly just too lazy to upgrade.
