can't edit templates

I'm trying to install shoutbox plugin for MyBB. The installation instructions says to edit the index template by inserting {$dvz_shoutbox}  into the code. However after clicking Save the page reloads and the index template code returns to its previous state, although the message says that the template has been saved. Any help?
