Is there a theme editor tutorial somewhere?

Is there a tutorial somewhere for using the theme editor in 1.8? A search turned up some items in the Resource section, but all seemed to pre-date 1.8. I mean something for the noobish, not expert.

Also, can I mod as a new theme and switch back and forth? The idea being not losing the working board because I screwed something up, or it turns out to be not ready for prime time.

Create a child theme and then do all your work mate, you won't lose anything
