1. how can I start the home page with the categories collapsed.

2. If that is possible is there a way to indicate that a certain category has a forum that has a new post.

I think both aren't possible without code modifications unfortunately.

The first one is possible. A cookie is stored in your browser that tells the forum which categories are collapsed (even after logging out and logging back in this cookie is intact).

I assumed hypermails meant to have it collapsed by default for new guests.

Ahh, well in that case we both know it's not possible without a code modification, as you said.
The word "I" in his post made me think otherwise, sorry if I have misunderstood you, hypermails.

thx TT.. I did mean for guest - basically for a site wide setting which will decide on how the site looks..
