You have to use a plugin. The best solution is probably the Google SEO plugin.

1.8.* and lower you have to use a plugin. MyBB 2.0 i believe does this by default. However MyBB 2.0 is still in beta testing.

The Google SEO plugin is by far the best. It is not as complicated as you might think.

Install/Activate the Google SEO plugin, move the htaccess text document that comes with the plugin folder to your main directory and rename it to .htaccess

Without those, you can run into url conflicts. It won't know what kind of url it is without them.

Yes you should keep them however if you don't like thread/forum being used at the beginning of the url path you can replace them with another term.
