You realy should use a new theme.... porting an old one is not worth the much work wich is needed for this.

first try all on the new default theme ... if its work get a theme and implement what you need or copy default and modify it.

its not relatet to plugin compatibility the most are compatibel with booth ... only some plugins require new version...

but for me all run finde with php 7 and mariadb

Most webserver/php/db packages are used from dotdeb.org
