If I try to reply to a post I get

This page isn’t working
MySite.co.uk is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500


If I click on New Reply it works ok.

This is a web hosting issue. I'd guess it may be something to do with mod_security. Check with your host and ask them to disable and re check the issue.

I've uploaded version 1.8.15
and all works ok.

Nice it worked for you.
This may be caused for certain missing file as well, if you can't get a page you can't get an error message from MyBB (or PHP). I think that was the case.
