As the title states, just a thought, but it would be an interesting consideration to think about and possibly see an implementation of say emoji-awesome to replace the existing emoticon images in the future.

I like this idea also as this would be really awesome, I would like to see this as well. Interestingly enough, I was just recently looking at another sort of of same type library for something else for example this library...
Twemoji Awesome:

https://github.com/ellekasai/twemoji-awesome
... and such prompted me to search if something of the sort had been suggested already, thus leading me to this post and prompting my urge to then comment on such.
Reading through such, it does make sense as to why something of the sort would be more considered not in 1.8 but more 1.9 as it does make sense that 1.9 appears to be using font awesome in implementation even in the default front-end theme if you view the demo of such so I can see why migrating to something like this would would make more sense in such times.
Regardless I do like this idea also as this would be really awesome, but, I do think the OP is correct in later responses that the original suggested library ...
Emoji-awesome:

... has more to offer overall being that it includes more options of emoji types rather than say just using a twit-only emoji type library as was mentioned in response by another user. Regardless, such still sounds rather interesting.
