You're creating a huge false equivalence here. Invision started charging for their software in 2004, that was 17 years ago. The forum market was hugely different back then, and they've had 17 years to make it a sustainable model, build the software up, and build a customer base. It was also only 2 years old at the time, MyBB has been around since 2002 also, so is 19 years old. You're comparing making 2 year old software commercial in 2004 with making 19 year old software commercial in 2021, the notion that because it was successful for them then means the same would happen now given the 17 year gap and huge shift in the market, not to mention the difference in standard of the product, is just incorrect. Simply putting a price on something doesn't mean that people are going to be compelled to pay it. If Ford said "we need to make more money, why are we charging $30,000 for a car when BMW charge $50,000, we should charge $50,000 for ours too, it works for them", it's not going to work, because they're completely different standards of products, and people wouldn't suddenly start paying $50,000 for a car that last week cost $30,000.
