I got this error installing an advertisement plugin & recent thread plugin

Not enough information. What are the plugins, and turn on error handling so you get specific info.

I'm trying to run these plugins, but the error occurs, on signup, even with all plugins disabled.

& I googled error handling but have no idea what it is

It's in ACP -> Config -> Server and Optimization
It will allow you to display the error so that MyBB will show what the specific issue is. It's very likely related to MySQL running in strict mode (a wild guess), which will cause some older plugins to fail on installation. If this is the culprit, it's very easy to resolve, either with a fix to the plugin (we can help) or by disabling strict mode through your host.

Edit: See @Darth Apple has replied. Familiar with one of the plugins you were trying to install when the issue started, but not the other. So need to see what the error is trying to tell us.

Didn't read the whole thing, but pretty sure @Darth Apple hit the nail on the head. I'd ask host support to remove strict mode on the mysql instance, but takes a restart to make any config changes permanent.
If you have command line access, could make the change temporarily with "set global sql_mode=' ';"
