if you mean buttons style, you must go to Admin CP -> Templates & Style -> your default theme -> global.css 
in mybb default theme buttons use classes like button,new_thread_button,new_reply_button,...

OK I understood this thanks to your reply. I thought I could replace the buttons with images. Is that possible?

If you edit the template for each button you can change them to be an image or whatever you like, yes.

It depends what it is you're actually trying to do, which I'm not really clear on. Do you want to change the enter button to be a single image, or just change the icon in the button?

I managed to change the reply buttons and to open a new discussion but I don't know where to put my hands to change the 'on, off and closed' buttons next to the sections.
