I downloaded the latest version 'changed files' from mybb. It doesn't have the install folder.

Ok, then why the Upgrade page https://mybb.com/versions/1.8.35/ says it needs one?

Quote:Upgrading from older versions may require running the install/ upgrade script.
from 1.8.34 to 1.8.35 it isn't needed

for example in Download-Package with changed files from 1.8.33 to 1.8.35 there is an install included

If the changed files package lacks an install directory it is likely it is unnecessary for such update.

For this you need to be cautious about the version you are upgrading from; if you are updating from several updates ago it is possible that some in-between update requires the execution of the upgrade script. If this is the cause you would need to check each version's changed-files packages for its contents.

If you are updating from 1.8.34 you don't need to run the upgrade script.

Otherwise, you might need to run it as described previously if you are updating from 1.8.33 or below.
