well, my MyBB forum got its first spam ... came from a user on a Phillipine IP, using a @live.com email. The board requires captcha and email based authentication to register. the spammer posted one spam re: VoIP junkware.

question: are other admin seeing any uptick in spambot attempts on myBB ?

Any forum will get spammed at some point, the volume depends on how big/busy/well known your forum is. Akismet can be used if you're getting hit hard but to be honest you'd be better off hiring more moderators to delete the spam and ban the members who post it. Spam prevention software can only do so much. A human can register an account manually to get past the CAPTCHA and to authenticate the email but then they can setup a bot to post the spam... it'd be easiest to deal with it as it happens. Spam here is dealt with pretty quickly, just need some active mods.

this is a small obscure no-money-involved forum. hiring moderators??? you mean people get PAID to do this stuff? Huh

I'm the main admin, there are one or two other people who have moderator privs but aren't nearly as hip to the hackery. i'm mildly annoyed that when I tagged this new 'user' as banned, he still showed up on the 'welcome our newest user...' thing on the home page, so I went and deleted him (after banning the entire Phillipines subnet)

The last forum I setup, (phpBB based) I ended up banning pretty much every IP subnet in Asia, this hugely reduced drive-by spamming. I hate geoIP based blockage, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

No I don't mean paid, I just mean getting more moderators... if more people were moderators there'd be more people to delete the spam.
