How long does it take to CloudFlare to enable and does the site go slower?

Setting up CloudFlare generally takes about five minutes or so (actual nameserver change at registrar might take 24-72 hours).

As a general guide, CloudFlare generally helps improve performance about 50-60% (varies by site, of course).

This is one of the best tutorials i've ever read. Its a standard for me, when i am creating a new forum to use this as the first thing. This also did help me speed up my site a lot.

when using yahoo's smush it tool, it keeps changing my x.gif files to x.gif.png when I go to download the compressed images. why is it doing this and is there a way to stop it?

sadly I might have to disable cloudflare on my forum as some users are repeatedly receiving the 'site is offline' error after the site has been fine for a day or two.
