Just upload a file called favicon.ico to your website root.
There are tons of websites where you can make your own, though you can easily open up an image editing program, create a 16x16 image and call it favicon.ico.

Installing Favicon plugin will work if you only want to display it on your forum. Its easy and no require any file to transfer in root
