It most likely will work in 1.8. Not many changes are being made to 1.8 that will affect plugins or themes.

You could ignore it for ACP validation. Wink
Every time I add it to .inc/config.php, I get an error on the site.

If you are asking for help, you are doing it in the wrong way. Paste the error message.
Lol, pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong, and I've JUST reset my password, but everytime I attempt to login I get

The username and password combination you entered is invalid.
Try restoring the files to the way they were before. Also, there is a plugin for this over on MyBBSecurity.

I don't consider the plugin worth installing, since IMO, the point is the PIN being saved out the DB while the plugin uses a setting to save it.
I even suggested editing it in the plugin file.
