There aren't many 'good' free ones. I have used SocialEngine in the past, which is very good.

I suppose if you must go for a free one, Elgg is an option.

^Many suggested me Dolphin. Will try that out.

@malcolm - is it really good ? if it is really very good, then I will think about purchasing it...

Turns out social engine has very bad reviews from users. Don't want to risk money.

Among dolphin & elgg, I liked dolphin.

User end, i've hadted elgg. I've used the facebook clone one. But last i checked they still get taken down.

I wouldn't mind using facebook clone, as it will be just limited to my college.

can you name it ?

It all comes down to how extensively you're going to use it.

Most people buy it hoping to create the next Facebook, but give up when they realize they actually need experience to run a social network, of any scale.
