I use Hawkhost and they load 2,000 onto a server. My sites have never been slow or unresponsive. I also pay $11 per quarter.

Yeah but, how big were your sites?
I've had shared hosting capable of handling between 200 - 400 online at once, with 2,000 on 1 server you may be experiencing performance issues around 100.

cnet gave it 3/3 pfft,,

CNET giving it 3/3 can be meaningless.

I googled and couldn't find CNet's review, but if it's anything like this one:
http://www.techtola.com/2008/06/cnet-top...llent.html

There's no review on the technical details. How well do we know CNET tested InMotion? Do we know they did it with a fairly high traffic site/board?

Look at ollie's posting:
http://community.mybb.com/thread-111501.html

He uses In-Motion hosting, and is having trouble with only 60 - 110 users online at one time. Before my forums moved to VPS/Dedicated, one ran with about 200 online at time, on a shared.
Another ran with 400 online at a time, on a shared.

I may have paid more than ollie, from the looks of it, his service is 5.99 at In Motion Hosting.
Mine was 9.99 Toungue

But the fact is, around 5,000 people per server just doesn't seem right.
Heck, I'd like Labrocca's opinion on this.
If he tells me I'm wrong, then I'll respect & accept that.

I still have a shared planned at 1and1.com, with only 70 clients.
But of course each host has their ups & downs, I don't find the customer service all that well there, but I feel I get more bang for my buck in terms of resources. In the past, they did limit to 100MB per database, that was a huge drawback, but since upgrading to 1GB, that's much less of an issue. If a database reaches near 1GB, which would be a long time anyway, then consider moving if you choose 1and1.

Even GoDaddy doesn't seem as bad now, they load on 2,000 people or so.

Bottom line, you get a smaller piece of the pie when its divided with more people. If you're okay with that, cool.

I wouldn't be.

See the main issue is that there are over thousands and I really mean thousands of hosts. Each have their own claims that they are second to none, outclass services, blah blah,,,

And to make matters worst we have the "unlimited/unmetered" concept. Makes things even more confusing =|

Now you are right about sharing one server with either a thousand or a hundred should make a difference. But can't they not shuffle websites back and forth, what might be a 100 client server today can be a +1000 server next week D:

,,and funny thing is one of my site hosting just got suspended because of "over-usage".

They have a lot of clients who do illegal activities or violates the licenses of other software, yet they do nothing about it, no matter what.
Once a site abused peoples e-mails, including mine.
After a month of sending e-mails with headers they still didnt agree so I got an independant lawyer and it took another month for the issue to be resolved and stopped, but the client was still there.
So give them the f-bomb.
No self-respecting hoster is able to do that.

Ok tbf you are looking at Hostgator from experience in an exceptional circumstance. My experienc with a site within the rules,, over the past year and 4 months has been excellent; fast site, minimal downtime, cheap, and excellent support on a range of issues.
Don't bash a host if you haven't used them or don't have experience with.

The general consensus in the hosting industry is that:

1) You get what you pay for.
2) There is no such thing as unlimited space and bandwidth. This is only used as a marketing scheme and the real limit lies behind inodes and resource usage.
3) Always read the TOS.

Don't rely on Google because the top results that show are mostly top/best listings with affiliate programs. The only place you should go to for hosting reviews and recommendations is WebHostingTalk.com.

I've used Hostgator before and it's pretty good considering their size. Their support is amazing. They are probably the best hosting provider with the unlimited business model. I don't have experience with Dreamhost (another host who claims unlimited space/bandwidth) but searching here shows that Labrocca vouches for its reliability.

No you're totally right, that is possible, but that doesn't seem to be the case with InMotion.

I was talking to ollie, and he said they're pushing him to move to a VPS rather than offering a server move to a less crowded server.

That actually happened to one of my sites before I moved it to a VPS, the host offered to move it to a "fresh" server with about 20 clients or so on it, because my site having 400+ on or so was more demanding than the other users.

Is your host InMotion too?
Is your host willing to do anything to help you out at no additional cost? Just curious.
@pdtrx; My friend had used Hostgator and he had nothing but complains. I also did my research and did find angry customers on various forums.

I'm sorta in the same situation as ollie (except for the InMotion part), they're pushing me for a higher package. I won't give in as I can get a better bargain for the same money and also because they've introduced nonsensical paying options.

I'm moving into DreamHost by tomorrow.

Not true. Don't say "HostGator do this [...]" just because you've seen one scenario and perhaps didn't know the full story. HostGator once suspended me until I removed one thread about a guy selling porn accounts. Also sent me an email when one of my members posted a film-download. So no, you're wrong.

Depends on the staff who viewed your site, perhaps.
Since Ansem told he had gone to the level of legal action, i would say, they aren't good enough in maintaining their terms.
I had to completely ridicule any potential "black hat" activity off my site, they really gave me a hiding over it. Their uptime is incredible, just they lack resources if your site gets quite a lot of connections at one time. For a small site, Hostgator is fine; but as you say it could of been a Staff issue. Not saying there's no one better, I seriously recommend hawkhost.
