It combats nothing, purely karma.
I use Notepad++ now (used to use Notepad, but that seemed to be getting crapper and crapper every day I used it). I don't design images, but if I have to, I tend to use Pixlr. It's no Photoshop, but it's better than MS Paint. I also use 7zip for transferring files (sometimes, not always).
