This is my 2nd post here and I think there will be many more. I'm trying to install MyBBS step by step and have been having problems. One by one I've fixed them and now I'm at the step where I need to "run?" something in the install directory. The main problem here is that I know NOTHING about HTML, PHP or working within a server environment.

Please bare with me as I'm learning. (I'm an old dog and new tricks don't come easily Blush)

All files and folders have had their permissions set etc. The next step is simply to do this:

The installer is found in the "install" directory within the MyBB folder. For example, if your forum is located at: http://www.example.com/forum/ , you will find your installer at http://www.example.com/forum/install/

What am I looking for in the "install" directory and how do I get it to run? I've tried loading the http://www.example.com/forum/install (using my paths of course) into my browser but all I get is website not found?

The only files I see in the "install" directory are stylesheet.css, upgrade.php and index.php as well as subfolders named resources, and images. I can only work with any files and/or folders from within my FTP client. I can't do anything with a browser .. like navigating to the aforementioned URL without getting an error.

What's your forum URL?

Wow that was fast. Thanks .. www.pcpphotovideo.com/marc-forum/

I'm trying to navigate to http://www.pcphotovideo.com/marc-forum/install/
There is a temporary web site there (pcphotovideo.com) that just has an index page for it. Never did anything with it. Tried to delete it but for some reason I couldn't.

I also own the w1nrg.com domain as well as pcphotovideo.com Would it be more correct to start from scratch and start something like

www.w1nrg.com and then www.w1nrg.com/marc-forum?

Sorry I'm such a "newbie" at this stuff.

The directory doesn't exist.

http://pcphotovideo.com/marc-forum/

The requested URL /marc-forum/ was not found on this server.

You have to make sure the forum is uploaded to a directory called "marc-forum" in the webroot (The webroot being where the main index page is).

Something is amiss I guess. There are two (of several) folders in the (root?) directory.

/pcphotovideo.com
/marc-forum

I've attached a screen shot of my web server's root directory as reported in my FTP client.

Does that look right?

I think you need more information from me.

Original BBS was bought years ago. Paid a guy to set it up. (Never really liked it but it served my purposes. As system admin I was able to maintain the BBS okay. Had one problem a few years ago and had the original installer fix it. It was originally a "Wow.bbs. Worked fine until a few months ago. My programmer is no longer around. And the company is out of business.

After 3 months of trying to fix the stupid thing .. (probably doing more harm than good) I just deleted it from the server and decided to start off from scratch. At this time the only thing left (I think) on the server was my very old original temporary one page web.

My ISP says there is nothing wrong with the server and my problems (with the old bbs) needed to be addressed by someone who can fix (program) the software.

After looking at my attached screen shot, do you think I should just start from scratch and set up w1nrg.com alone on that server? I'll have to start a new support thread over there in hopes they can guide me.

Boy this is frustrating. Sigh.
You just need to move the "marc-forum" directory in to the "pcphotovideo.com" directory. Problem solved. Smile

I moved the entire "marc-forum" into the "pcphotovideo.com". Then tried the URL: http://www.pcphotovideo.com/marc-forum/ and still get the not found error.

Try it yourself. By the way .. should I be worried about security ?? It looks like everything is open to anyone who can access that URL ?? I CAN access the www.pcphotovideo.com web page okay. I'd like to nuke the whole thing and start fresh but I can not delete some of the pcphotovideo stuff. Maybe I need to interface with my ISP and have them somehow reformat the system and tell me how to set up the w1nrg.com domain I own and install the "mybbs" into that ??

You don't need to make the "Marc_forum" a sub-directory of /pcphotovideo.com.

If you own the pcphotovideo.com domain name then you can upload the MyBB files in total to your public_html file and set the system to recognise the MyBB installation as /pcphotovideo.com/index.php.

It's quite a simple process, you then run the MyBB install file by typing http://www.pcphotovideo.com/install

You will need to delete or rename the old /pcphotovideo.com files first.

Any problems send me a PM, I can do this for you if needs be.

Thanks Spangle ... I'll try your suggestions after dinner. I'd really like to get rid of the pcphotovideo.com account or at least set up the BBS so it would be part of the w1nrg.com domain. So my users can log in to W1NRG.com and access the bbs directly. I'm going to get in touch with my ISP and see what I need to do to add w1nrg.com to the server.

If needed I'll send you a PM here. I assume this bbs supports intra bss emails? I'll have to check how to do that from my account control panel.

Thanks for both your and Nathan's help .. I appreciate it a lot.

I'll have to hold off on any further work on this. I tried logging onto my ISP's control panel and something funky is going on there. Some areas of the control panel work normally .. and others are now telling me they have no record of my main domain. Arrghhhhh. This could be why I'm having so much trouble ??
I'm back. Hope everyone had a nice holiday. It seems I was spinning my wheels and getting nowhere because my server had all kinds of problems.

They seemed to have fixed over the weekend. Now I am getting the proper responses from my queries. In short there were many areas of my user control panel that were glitched.

Everything is now working as it should and I'm finally able to start the MyBBS installation.

I'm up setting up the SQL area. And that's as far as I can get. I've logged into my ISP's user control panel and set up (I think) an SQL data base. But the install application says there might be a problem with the host name and user data ?? One quick question. The SQL version I have is 5. Is that okay? I don't see any references to SQL 5.

I've tried database engines options for "MySQL Improved", "MySQL", and I don't think the "MySQL Lite3" is the proper one to use with MySQL 5.

Also there is no <back> to navigate to a prior screen in the install application, so I've been just closing it and restarting it while testing. Is that okay?
