The last post in the 1.8 news was almost a year ago... ( http://blog.mybb.com/2012/04/03/mybb-1-8...roduction/ )

The popular themes such as "Cure" haven't been updated in more than 2 years.... (http://mods.mybb.com/view/the-cure-for-mybb-1-6)

Another popular theme "Apart" has completely given up support on their theme since apparently it will be part of 1.8, so they decided to just not support it anymore. (http://community.mybb.com/thread-74333.html)

Seems really shoddy and sparse for the year 2013...
Seems like you haven't done much research.

As Josh said, you can see what we're doing on 1.8, we announced the alpha less than a month ago.

How does themes have anything to do with the activity of MyBB as a whole?

MyBB 1.8 is moving along quite nicely, and the recent internal discussions and prototypes of MyBB 2.0 are outstanding.
Far from it. MyBB is being actively developed and supported. Millions of people across the globe use MyBB, we don't intend to stop developing it anytime soon.

That's up to the theme author. We can't really do anything if they stop updating their releases. Themes can be updated relatively easy, it's a matter of checking for updated templates and updating a few lines in the templates.

That's because Justin is working on the 1.8 design. It's not as if you can't get support for it, but Justin personally won't be providing support. Other members of the community will be happy to help.

Definitely not. We have a lot planned for 1.8 and even more so for 2.0. Although we tend to keep things to ourselves we're constantly working on developing and planning the next best thing. Smile
Okay, great. Thanks. All good info.
I think the forums here are a much better judge of how active support for MyBB is. The staff only post blog entries every now and then, but I see Orange and Red and other colored names here all the time, and I don't even visit the support section.

You could easily get support from other users on this forum. You don't need the author of the theme to support you when there are tons of others theme developers that will respond to your support thread within a short time. On top of that MyBB 1.8 alpha has already been released and you can download it, but I don't believe it's ready for an active forum environment.
Impressively diplomatic response considering the totally ill-informed, accusatory tone of the original post. MyBB is alive and well.

And that's why I replied how I did. I was kind of stressed about other things then too.

Sorry you took it that way, but with dead links (http://justinsoltesz.com/apart) and links to ancient update posts from the theme author for 1.8 (http://community.mybb.com/thread-74333.html) regarding the status of 1.8, perhaps you could understand my being ill-informed.

Most of the free themes haven't been updated in a couple years...I was concerned regarding compatibility with new versions of MyBB

Of course MyBB isn't responsible for what theme creators do, but seeing how Justin is developing the theme for 1.8, I'd expected slightly more.

As well, the lack of a favicon at mods.mybb.com is strangely unprofessional given the high profile of MyBB...

Don't get me wrong... I think MyBB is a huge accomplishment and I can't imagine the amount of hours put in by the MyBB crew.

I'm beyond pleasantly surprised with MyBB. Apart looks awesome and modern. MyBB is highly functional and logical, with a ridiculous amount of options for customizing.
