There are arguments for both cases.
http://no-www.org/
http://www.yes-www.org/
In the end I don't think it makes any significant difference (specifically SEO-wise). You should just be consistent. If you choose no-www, make sure you redirect www to no-www. Likewise, if you choose www, make sure you redirect no-www to www.
Personally I'd go for no-www. It's just cleaner.

For me, personally, "www" is just a waste. I know it's on the World Wide Web, because I'm searching for it in my browser. It's pretty redundant really.
Now, "ftp." or "email." are both useful because they explain what the domain does, but I think the Internet pretty much agrees that no "www" means it's World Wide Web content by default. But that's just lazy old me ^_^

It really makes no difference as long as you redirect www to non-www or vice versa. However, I usually redirect WWW to non-www.

I'd agree with this. As long as you've got a redirect so they don't both work, you should be fine.

You may choose any one of these, how ever it would be good for SEO to have an http 301 redirect to the targeted URL.

It is really up to the webmasters. I have seen many forums which do not use www, just as I have seen many that have.
Some webmasters really just don't pay that much attention to it.
