I've noticed a problem during development of my community. Whileas we do not have a lot of members the members that we do have are pretty active. I'm looking into methods of promoting my community (other than paid advertising), what did you do to promote your communities? I'm looking to increase registrations.
Promoted on a promotion forum. Take my advice: don't.
Facebook and google+ pages, post important/good content stuff on there.
Reach out to people who are interested in your forums Niche see where they frequent and make yourself known in that area.
i only does promotions on some good forums with some good userbase rest is the SEO things i generally does.
Promote your forum on other big forums using paid advertising, blogs commenting also helps.
Social media campaigns such as giveaways and free stuff really help in increasing members.
Referral rewards for existing members is also interesting way to gain members.
I have seen some people use fb ads as well for promoting their forums which is very powerful indeed.
You should give a try on fb as well.

Interesting. I'll look into that service.
Visited other communities that were similar to mine, also went on various forum exchanges to look for posts for posts just to bump activity for those who were interested but saw a new forum and avoided it.
Promote in the high discussion forum and provide few important things on your community forum.
