MyBB 1.6.x forum can be updated to MyBB 1.8.x
older versions' plugins and themes are not expected to work with MyBB 1.8.x
please see upgrading guidance
in brief:
* put forum off line & disable the plugins
* take backups of database, config.php file & settings.php file (database backup is most important)
* take backup of any other files which are required (eg. language files which were manually edited)
* upload files of the new version by overwriting existing files
* run upgrade script by visiting forumURL/install/upgrade.php & following the instructions
