How about offering an AMP version in 2.0 ?
We can certainly consider it, so long as it's easy enough to implement and doesn't have any downsides (which it doesn't seem to at first glance).

For those wondering, AMP refers to the Accelerated Mobile Pages project: https://www.ampproject.org
It's not that easy to implement because its HTML structure is quite different from HTML5. Different tags and various restrictions.

Ah, I've never looked at it before. If it's completely different it would mean a lot of work.
Do this means more work for theme developers?
Bad idea for a forum, you basically can't have any of the expected functionality of a forum in AMP. You can't even really have a user interface.

And these are only practical concerns — frostschutz's linked article provides more compelling reasons to be wary of AMP.

MyBB should focus on how they can make the software perform better for mobile users in ways that don't contribute to the death of the open web, something I think that forums in particular rely on.
WordPress has a few AMP plugins. Woltlab has introduced AMP support in their work in progress article system. Google give weightage for AMP in search results.

This doesn't respond to any of the concerns raised in this thread. And you made the limitation clear in your post itself: Woltlab is only using it for their articles section.
