HOME / CUSTOM PROFILE FIELDS

NAME
Sex
Please select your sex from the list below.

It really doesn't make any sense. It could properly be presented as GENDER, please select your GENDER (at birth presumably) in 2.0.

Also a default AGE option could help since some boards and topics are age-restricted and some plugins use age-restriction.
There should not be a default age option.

There's no difference between Gender and Sex but I'm sure the team is open to suggestion. This is more personal preference than anything, you can make the change yourself right now.

I think you'll find millions of people who would disagree with that statement, which is what makes this a tricky subject.

If we are to quote Wikipedia on this.

Quote:In ordinary speech, sex and gender are often used interchangeably.
Quote:Some dictionaries and academic disciplines give them different definitions while others do not.

There's really no need to focus on such trivial things when there's a software that needs all of the attention. I do understand what you're getting at, though.

The question is what were the developers thinking when they used the current term and should this time be any different.

Tricky indeed.

Keywords being "often" and "some". There's a significant distinction between the two.

To many people it's not a trivial thing at all, and user experience is incredibly important. It's something which should be researched and understood if changes are to be considered.

Personally, I'd advocate for a profile field where "Gender" is a textbox and users can freely enter how they wish to be identified. It can be left empty if they so wish. It's the more sensitive approach. Gender is more relevant to addressing someone than their birth sex is.

Thanks for linking the topics. I'm seeing responses from both sides on this. Would it be best to poll this kind of thing or give up and add everything you think? I can't answer that.

Two good points that I can relate with:

I'd be okay with that.
Honestly, the easiest solution is to just not have that field there by default. I don't really know why it's there as a default now. Obviously upgrades would retain the existing field.
I removed it. Pretty useless unless you find a reason to need it in your forum.
I'm with Euan T on this one. No point in having it there in the vast majority of the time. And those times where they do need this they can add it in themselves. This way they can also add it however they like, whether it's a dropdown box with a number of different genders, a text box, radio buttons or whatever.
