basically I'd suggest to use good quality questions & answers for the registration [can be based on your forum's main subject (niche)]
& put new users' x posts on moderation queue [eg. see required approvals plugin (see also this thread)]

After switching from MyBB's default captcha to Google's noCaptcha reCaptcha I haven't had a spam bot since.
I suggest that for a quick and easy workaround.
ACP -> Configuration -> General Configuration
Then just find "CAPTCHA Images for Registration & Posting" change it to "noCaptcha reCaptcha"
You can get your public & private keys for it from here: https://www.google.com/recaptcha/intro/
Just make sure to select "reCAPTCHA V2."
I can't quite remember if MyBB does the rest for ya' or if you still need to add the script file from it though.
