Any progress on this feature? I see it's still an open issue on Github. Maybe this can be added soon?

As above, this will require database changes and is not likely to be part of 1.9 unless there is a PR made from somebody to add it.

If anyone would like to do this, I'll donate 25 bucks to whoever completes it.

I think, you could mange this with this plugin, if it would be possible to integrate the tags in the thread list:

Maybe as a workaround? I don't know, but I would try it this way.
