i use xampp and it work good.
I don't use Vista. But I usually install them separate and configure them as I want. Apache, mysql and php.
Xampp FTW Smile
I just tried XAMPP it failed as well on Vista I just had 2 PC techs look over my PC the have 20+ yrs background they say xampp is not made for vista
well if xampp did not work for you (looks at sky coz it worked for me) try looking in google for web server that work on win vista.
I've just installed Vista a few hours ago (been meaning to for a while now). On XP I was using WAMP, but if it doesn't work on Vista I too will be looking for alternatives.
I prefer to use my server (local network, runs Linux) as it is waaay faster than localhost that runs Windows (at least XP).

Still getting video card/sound card drivers and the likes installed. Those are higher priority than a localhost that lags anyway.

Sorry - they're wrong - it works fine.

You need to unblock XAMPP in the Vista firewall if you're using the built in one. You'll also need to allow the XAMPP setup to bypass UAC (User Account Control) if you have it enabled. So when you download the installer for XAMPP, save it somewhere, then right click > Run as Administrator.

Edit: Failing that, temporarily disable UAC via the Control Panel, using the instructions listed in method #4 at http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm. Re-enable it after installing.

XAMPP is a combination of Apache, PHP, MySQL and other services, all of which work perfectly fine on Windows Vista.
Wamp has worked here on Windows Vista since installing it - January/Feb 2007.
