For some reason, I'll get 404 not found errors whenever I try to navigate the forums when I have this feature enabled. Why is that, and how can I fix it? I've been wanting to be able to make use of such a feature for a long time.

Make sure you've named .htaccess.txt to .htaccess
Note that this will not work on all servers.

As stated, it doesn't work on all servers.
For one, your server needs to be Apache, and the .htaccess file must be allowed. If you're on shared hosting, you should chase up your host on this issue.
I have the same problem too. I am running a shared server with my dads site.

Have you renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess? Are you running Apache, and does it have mod_rewrite loaded?
