how come i cant check the mybb server plugin updates site 
Has it always said that, or has it worked some times in the past?? If it always happens, I think a necessary function used for connection is blocked; does the normal MyBB version check work??
yes for mybb it works but not for plugins
( plugins did work at some time until i think 1.4.9 )

did you update to 1.4.9 and this started to happen ?
I can assure you that there weren't any changes to the plugin update function in 1.4.9.
It's probably going to be a dodgy plugin or your server/host.
Check the phpinfo() for your site and copy and paste the disable_functions line here.

I have the same problem, it won't connect to the update server.
It means it cannot connect to the mod server(update server)
This usually happens when you have alot of plugins.

if you have too many plugins it wont connect to the server ?
i have not added any plugins and this happened once i went up to 1.4.9 so it has nothing to do with my plugins
