You mean when they register they are automatically signed up for a news letter right?

Can i set when a user registers that they get an email subscription. Apparently forcing it is spam, so can i set it by default?

I would consult a lawyer about your countries laws. I'm fairly certain Canada has a similar law to our Can-Spam Act. If so, read the law and determine what you must do to legally send out the newsletter.

it's not illegal if they can unsubscribe it.
