They call it "link building" - I call it effing spam. Seriously, these posts shouldn't even be allowed at DP. My forum is relatively small, and I get the orange spammed out of it because of these people. Surely having your site's name spammed all over the place will reduce its reputation?

I have recently come to the conclusion that all "internet marketers" are morons.
It does and is kind of spam. I used to do it on this one site because it was free, but it was for my friends site. But seriously, they want people to pay for spam?
This is a spam bot, just not any spam.
It is spamming and i hate it when people do it! They do it on popular forums, and that administrators, moderators - in other words 'The Staff' - do nothing about it!
Cmybb got profile-spammed out the wazoo - that domain probably has history. I got fed up and added large red print to my TOS that says I'm allowed to do what I want to their links. That probably means nothing legally, but surprisingly, the spam levels have gone down a lot.....
The amount of spam we get at www.FreeWebHostingTalk.com is insane. I've resorted to adding domains to the word censor list so now the majority of the manual spam looks like this: ******. Which makes them mad since they can't even make new accounts and spam it later. Big Grin
I use the word censor too but I replace it with a description of what it is (stupid attempts at spam, not what the domain is about)
WordPress spam is insane.
Tell me about it. Talk about holiday spam......

I have never really ever had a spam problem on my forum.
I do require real emails and email activation.
I do block "some" proxies with a plugin.
I do run bot traps in the hope to catch them.

But ultimately i dont do anything.
Well i do ban a few obvious ones in my .htaccess like below though if that helps?

Not sure if this is what stops my forum getting hit but its been up for about 2 years and i cant remember it ever getting hit by a bot. A few silly members sure but no bots i can tell.
