Hi all,

I currently have a relatively small forum using SMF 2.0rc3 with 130 members and almost 4000 posts.

I would like to convert these to myBB 1.6 but before I start I have a few questions.

To give you an idea of where I have got to, I have installed myBB 1.6 on my testsite and have already uploaded the convert directory to my test myBB installation using the defaults, the myBB forum seems to work correctly I had no issues with installation (gratz on that), also I have read on this forum that the best way to convert/merge SMF2.0rc3 to myBB is to make sure that there are no plugins(SMF calls them packages) that affect the SMF database so here are the questions.
  1. Are we looking at a default install of SMF2.0rc3 (by default I mean default template/theme) no plugins but full content.
  2. Does the merge system affect the original installation of SMF2.0rc3 in other words will the original SMF forum remain intact.
  3. How does the merge system affect things like membergroups and permissions as set in SMF2.0rc3.
  4. I should have put this first does the myBB merge system even support SMF2.0rc3

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Jon
ok most of this i can answers in short
1. no (i still had all packages installed) it will not transfer smf templates.
2. no just converts it to mybb format. You will still have fully fuctionals smf. especially if you use different dbs
3. it will try to import them as they are it may not have exactly the same permissions.
4. yes
Most plugins (or packages) won't have any effect on the merge system so it's probably safe to merge with them still active. But some will effect it, if you have problems go back and try without them. The merge/conversion doesn't affect your SMF database in any way so you can run as many trial runs as necessary. Smile
Thanks for that adbrad Smile
  1. Ahh ok thats a relief, although I have already told my members that I will be setting SMF back to the default template for a short time and also remove all packages (I only have two).
  2. Thats great to know, I will have a separate database for myBB.
  3. Ok that is good, I will sort it out after the conversion/copy.
  4. Wish me luck Smile

Sorry AJS I got so caught up in my discussion with adbrad I missed your post I think, to be on the safe side that I will remove all SMF packages (I only have two) and reset the forum to the default theme I have already told my members about this and it seems that by doing that it will be the safer option, I am trying to make sure that there are no significant breaks during the transfer progress, apart from putting the SMF forum into maintenance mode for a short time.

The SMF forum has been in existence for the past five years so I would like to make the transition as painless as possible for my members

Jon.
hope it all goes well for you if you get stuck give us a shout
it may pay you to put your smf in maintenance mode while you run the conversion as you'll end up doing it again if more posts are made
Yes adbrad I agree although I am not exactly overrun with posts at the moment, I think my members would like to see in addition to the new website a decent forum system to back it up, and, from all of the reviews I have checked, myBB 1.6 is the forum software for the future.

And if I get a problem you (or AJS) will be the first people I come to Smile

To all of the myBB developers out there, keep up the great work Smile
Ok now it is crunch time do I take the blue pill or the red pill (The Matrix)

Jon
well i had about 16 plugins on my forum when i converted all still activated i admit i had a few issues with posts but nothing a few copy and pastes won't fix.
Hmm thanks for that adbrad Smile

I think as I have so few packages/plugins installed it shouldn't be a problem.

I would be interested to know however, how long the conversion process takes

Oh and for reference purposes, my current main site is at

My current SMFforum is at

The new template which I designed personally for my site is at

And my interpretation of this template for Joomla is at

The default install for myBB is available at

I also have a local copy of all of this running on xampp

if all goes well and depending how many posts etc about 20 mins
one more thing after i converted my post counts said zero even though they was there. if this happens have a read of this http://community.mybb.com/thread-52909-page-1.html it solved it for me.
just a comment on your template why do you need 2 menus one on top and one down side
Aha adbrad Smile that is the initial page, the idea behind it is that you select game-specific from either menu and then depending on what game you pick, the relevant tools and links for that specific game appear in the left hand menu, whilst the top menu always gives you access to the main sections of the website also the right hand menu will convey things such as server availability for the specific game picked latest news via RSS or Atom and that specific game's forum links including latest posts etc.

Also the menus you see on the new site are just joomla modules the actual template doesn't specify any menus apart from just basic module positions what you put in those positions are up to you
