You're making contradictory statements here. If you understand that some people wouldn't want comments, why are you arguing that the rule is faulty and comments should be allowed regardless of the author's wishes?
This isn't even an issue. A vast majority of posters want both publicity and feedback, and "Showcase" carries a connotation of feedback. As you can see, all but one of the threads on the first page of the Showcase forum are closed for comments.
