IRC is kind of different. I don't want to make a stereotype out of this, but most newbies don't know how to use IRC, or what it even is. And if they spammed the IRC, the staff would be able to take care of that easily.
I'm pretty sure you can get a chat bar plugin that integrates onto your site in seconds, forgot the name you'll just need to search for it, or you can use a chat plugin.
